When standing in front of a painting you love or admire, do you ever feel like you are standing in a space set apart from everything else around you, like you are standing on holy ground? Theorist and philosopher Mircea Eliade referred to things that mark such a space as 'heirophanies" : objects that define or manifest sacred space. Even before I discovered Eliade's concept of heirophany, it was clear to me that paintings are indeed manifestations of the sacred. It is this realization that is bound to my lifelong need to create art.

Biography
I am an artist trained formally, versed in the technicalities of drawing and painting. However, I have an inner need to express myself abstractly. My work is the result of a need to express an essence that is both primal and eternal, and abstract by its very nature. It is an essence with which our subconscious interacts, whether in a state of mental stillness, prayer, or dreams. Color is my forte and my primary means of expression. I push boundaries in color relationships, revel in the play of color harmonies, and use color to both defy and define form. In this way, my paintings sometime take on a surreal edge where color itself becomes the subject.
In August 2010, I received Baccalaureate of Science degrees in both Studio Art and
Anthropology from Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU.) During the summer of 2009 I had the opportunity to make an artist's pilgrimage to Paris, France where I studied the art and architecture of the masters - an experience which I still remember with awe.
Some of my more notable exhibits to date include my first solo exhibit as the guest artist for Folio, a literary community at SCSU, Cutting Edge at the Firehouse Gallery in Milford, CT, and City Wide Open Studios in New Haven, CT. I currently work from my studio in West Haven, CT.

Artist Statement
Art is a means for both the viewer and artist to achieve enlightenment. Paintings and other works of art can achieve the status of hierophany, an object which reveals the holy and defines sacred space. To partake in this attempt to create a hierophany by translating my personal sense of eternal essence is my aim.
My process involves creating abstract compositions that are mostly free of the expedience of outward representation, communicated instead from within. I use pure, intense color, bound by dreamlike, minimalist form. As an abstract artist, I wish to convey that a sense of holiness and joy can be found beyond recognition of or affiliation with outward reality.
In some instances in my work, line, shape, and volume merge to become recognizable. In these instances, it is not my intention to make it unrecognizable as a matter of course, but to instead use it as a means to utilize color boldly to harmonize and unite varying elements. Indeed, color relationships are my foremost concern and of primary importance in my work. In this way, my paintings can take on a surreal edge where color itself becomes an ethereal subject and the means to express that eternal essence which I so desire to communicate.

A Note About My Pricing
In the art world, we artists are warned not to make low prices a selling point (as an emerging artist, my prices are a bit on the low end). However, I have always stated that one of my aims as an artist is to increase appreciation and understanding of modern art. One of the ways to do this is to make my art affordable to more people, so that maybe someone who has never owned an original artwork can experience it. With my 16x20 pieces starting at only $100, they are a great alternative to a mass-produced, generic print from IKEA or Pottery Barn.
